Lesbian Sex Isn’t Real

Today a good friend of mine, a bisexual male, said the worst thing anyone can say to a queer woman: “I can understand why some people don’t think lesbian sex is real.” Translation, “I don’t think lesbian sex is real.”

Although I am fully aware, as are all other queer women, that what constitutes as lesbian sex is for other groups merely “third base,” it is still proven that lesbians sex results in a higher percentage of female orgasms than heterosexual sex does. Thus, by society’s current standards, penetration is more important that pleasure. To too many people, a woman penetrating another woman with a hard piece of plastic is more sexual than using one’s own body to please another. Yet, to some, not even full penetration with a dildo is enough to be real sex, because, apparently, true sex must involve two sexual organs slamming together. In other words, there is no way that two women can actually have sex. But even if we don’t have “real” sex, a lesbian couple is still loving. I think that any straight person or gay male could agree that they would rather only get to “third base” with someone they loved than have “real” sex with someone they weren’t attracted to.

So even if nothing can convince you that lesbian sex is real, keep that sentiment to yourself, or at least don’t share it with queer females. You see, if you say our sex isn’t real, you imply that our sexual orientation is less valid than others. It’s hard to be proud when you feel invalidated. In fact, the only time I ever feel insecure and depressed about my sexuality is when somebody tells me that my way of loving isn’t as good as everybody else’s is.
